You may also remember “Surge”, another hugely popular soda that USED to exist made by Coca Cola. The story goes like this: In 1996 Coca Cola released a soda only in Norway, to compete with Pepsi’s “Mountain Dew”, and they named this soda “Urge”.
Not long after, it was released in the U.S. under the new name “Surge”. In 2001, due to waning popularity of the soft drink, Coca Cola ceased production of Surge in bottled and can form, and in 2002 ceased production of the fountain syrup.
It was a very sad day for all of us who happened to love and be addicted to Surge. Fast forward to 2005, when, after people petitioning for Coca Cola to bring back Surge, they released a new drink called “Vault”. Upon first taste of this marvelous soda, people were instantly shocked, because low and behold, it tasted just like Surge!!
Upon closer inspection…it does appear that these two sodas taste the same, however there is a little bit of a difference. Vault has more of a carbonated kick to it, has a more yellow color, has a slightly different after taste, and has a whopping 70.5 mg of caffeine per 12 oz., as opposed the 52.5 mg of Caffeine in Surge. Other than that, these two lovely bastards taste pretty much exactly the same.
In fact, when Vault came out, it had been so long since I had Surge that I couldn’t even tell a difference! So we have to ask ourselves, did Coca Cola simply slightly reformulate Surge and name it Vault? I am a firm believer, along with many many others, that yes, this is exactly what they did.
I am so joyously happy that they decided to bring back SOME form of Surge for us all to enjoy wildly. We will always remember the glory days of Surge….and it shall live on in the form of Vault!! Here’s an interesting website about Surge you guys can check out if you want, it’s no longer updated, but they kept it online for people to enjoy: SaveSurge.org Please share this post around and leave a comment and tell me what your opinion on the whole Surge vs. Vault debate!
